Repeat offender appears in court on hit-and-run, drunk driving charges

A 74-year-old Saratoga man is in the Santa Clara County jail, facing hit-and-run and drunk driving charges, just months after he was released from prison for a previous hit-and-run.

Robert Schiro made a brief appearance in court Tuesday. His bail was set at $250,000.

One of the courtroom spectators was Ashley Nelson. She suffered a permanent brain injury and other disabilities after she and her husband were struck by a car as they bicycled along Highway 9 in Monte Sereno five years ago. The car drove away.
