Berkeley County sheriff resigns office after DUI accident, chase

More than a month after Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne Dewitt was arrested on DUI charges, he resigned his position. Gov. Nikki Haley accepted his resignation a short time later.

In a statement released by the sheriff’s office spokesman, Dewitt apologized again for the incident.

“Because of the magnitude of the decision and its implications I have taken some time to honestly assess the situation with the singular goal of ‘doing what is right and what is honorable.’ I have done much private soul searching,” he said in a statement.
