New state laws tighten penalties for repeat DUI offenders

Two new state laws went into effect on July 1 that strengthen supervision and penalties for repeat drunk driving, along with other drug- and alcohol-involved criminal offenses.

Officials say they think the legislation — Amelia’s Law and DUI Recidivism Acts — will help curb the behavior of high-risk, repeat drunk drivers and help with jail overcrowding.

Amelia’s Law is named for Maryville teenager Amelia Keon who was killed in a head-on collision with a repeat drug and alcohol offender.
