Repeat Drunk Driver Offenders To Have Special Licence Plates In PEI
Motorists with more than one conviction for drunk driving at Prince Edward Island may be getting a scarlet letter soon in the form of special licence plates. PEI would be the first province in Canada to have such a designation. Specially coded plates would inform police of multiple drunk driving offender status for those who didn’t have special vehicle mini-breathalyzers in their vehicles.
Special drunk driving offender plates are part of an overall legislative proposal to take on drunk drivers with multiple offenses. Similar plates already are used in Ohio and Minnesota in the U.S. Robert Vessey, PEI transportation minister proposed the plates in conjunction with police forces including the Charlottetown police. He said new laws would make roads safer. Paul Smith, Charlottetown police head, said the legislation gave police another tool to keep highways safe.
